2012 promises to be a year of changes, great and small. On a personal level, I'm on track to earn my master's in May, and hopefully start my teaching career in the 2012-2013 school year. On a larger scale, we have the Olympics and a presidential election to look forward to, along with the end of the world as we know it, right? I don't put much stock in the doomsday prophets, but I do plan to live each day to its fullest!I'm not really one to make resolutions, per se, but I do plan to continue striving to improve my health in 2012 and trying to kick up the pace a but, too! I also want to plant a garden this year. It would be great to eat my very own homegrown veggies! And once I finish grad school, I'd like to move on to learning Spanish and the piano. Hear's to a new year full of changes, challenges, hope, love, and happiness. Welcome, 2012!

Returning to my roots

I recently decided it's time to return to being a vegetarian. I've really enjoyed eating meat, and I'll definitely miss it, but I've strayed too far from my goal of only eating organic, grass-fed, locally raised meat and backslid all the way to ingesting the offerings of the industrial meat complex all too often - yuck! I've finally reached the point that I can no longer ignore my environmentalist conscious, so as of Monday I am officially back to being a vegetarian - and this time no fish, either. It feels really good! I should have done it a while ago.

For anyone who's not familiar with the environmental costs of a meat-heavy diet, PETA sums it up nicely: America's meat addiction is poisoning and depleting our potable water, arable land, and clean air. More than half of the water used in the United States today goes to animal agriculture, and since farmed animals produce 130 times more excrement than the human population, the run-off from their waste is fouling our waterways. Animal excrement emits gases, such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, that poison the air around farms, as well as methane and nitrous oxide, which are major contributors to global warming.

Forests are being bulldozed to make more room for factory farms and feed crops to feed farmed animals, and this destruction causes soil erosion and contributes to species extinction and habitat loss. Raising animals for food also requires massive amounts of food and raw materials: Farmed animals consume 70 percent of the corn, wheat, and other grains that we grow, and one-third of all the raw materials and fossil fuels used in the U.S. go to raising animals for food. In short, our country's meat addiction is wrecking the earth.

The White Buffalo was GREAT! Got to meet him, plus got a T-shirt and he signed my CDs. Then we stopped over in Laurel, MS, to visit Chris' friend Mark and had a really nice afternoon. All-in-all one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. I'm enjoying school, but this made me long for the days when I could spend my non-working time doing fun stuff! It won't be toooooo long before I can again, and I am ready!

Speaking of which, I went to a lecture tonight by Dr. Craig Witherspoon, superintendent for Birmingham City Schools. He has a great vision for the school system, and I hope he is able to implement it and that I can be a part of it!

Tips to reduce cancer risk from Environmental Working Group

1. Filter your tap water. Common carcinogens in tap water include arsenic, chromium, and chemical byproducts that form when water is disinfected. A simple carbon tap-mounted filter or pitcher can help reduce the levels of some of these contaminants. If your water is polluted with arsenic or chromium, a reverse osmosis filter will help.

2. Seal outdoor wooden decks and play sets. Those built before 2005 are likely coated with an arsenic pesticide that can stick to hands and clothing.

3. Cut down on stain- and grease-proofing chemicals. "Fluorochemicals" related to Teflon and Scotchgard are used in stain repellants on carpets and couches and in greaseproof coatings for packaged and fast foods. To avoid them, avoid greasy packaged foods and say no to optional stain treatments in the home.

4. Stay safe in the sun. More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. To protect your skin from the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) radiation, seek shade, wear protective clothing and use a safe and effective sunscreen from EWG's sunscreen database.

5. Cut down on fatty meat and high-fat dairy products. Long-lasting cancer-causing pollutants like dioxins and PCBs accumulate in the food chain and concentrate in animal fat.

6. Eat EWG's Clean 15. Many pesticides have been linked to cancer. Eating from EWG's Clean 15 list of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables will help cut your pesticide exposures. (And for EWG's Dirty Dozen, buy organic.)

7. Cut your exposures to BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen found in some hard plastic water bottles, canned infant formula, and canned foods. Some of these chemicals cause cancer in lab studies. To avoid them, eat fewer canned foods, breast feed your baby or use powdered formula, and choose water bottles free of BPA.

8. Avoid carcinogens in cosmetics. Use EWG's Skin Deep cosmetic database to find products free of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer. When you're shopping, don't buy products that list ingredients with "PEG" or "-eth" in their name.

9. Read the warnings. Some products list warnings of cancer risks -- read the label before you buy. Californians will see a "Proposition 65" warning label on products that contain chemicals the state has identified as cancer-causing.

The United States Supreme Court announced its decision Monday in Monsanto v. Geerston Farms, the first genetically modified crop case ever brought before the Supreme Court. Although the High Court decision reverses parts of the lower courts’ rulings, the judgment holds that the ban on planting Roundup Ready Alfalfa still stands until and unless future deregulation by the Agency occurs. This is a major victory for the Center for Food Safety and the Farmers and Consumers it represents!

Breaking News: Monsanto Takes Center for Food Safety Legal Victory to Highest Court

(January 15, 2010) Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to hear a first-time case about the risks of genetically engineered crops. Named Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, No. 09-475, the case before the high court will be yet another step in an ongoing battle waged by the Center for Food Safety to protect consumers and the environment from potentially harmful effects of genetically engineered (GE) crops.

The modified alfalfa seed at the heart of the dispute has been engineered to be immune to Monsanto’s flagship herbicide Roundup. Monsanto intervened in a 2007 federal district court ruling that the Department of Agriculture’s approval of GE alfalfa was illegal. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a 2006 lawsuit on behalf of a coalition of non-profits and farmers who wished to retain the choice to plant non-GE alfalfa. CFS was victorious in this case – in addition CFS has won two appeals by Monsanto in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit: in 2008 and again in 2009. Now, upon Monsanto’s insistence, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case.

“This is truly a ‘David versus Goliath’ struggle, between public interest non-profits and a corporation bent on nothing less than domination of our food system,” said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety. “That Monsanto has pushed this case all the way to the Supreme Court, even though USDA’s court-ordered analysis is now complete, and the U.S. government actively opposed further litigation in this matter, underscores the great lengths that Monsanto will go to further its mission of patent control of our food system and selling more pesticides.”

The federal district court required the Department of Agriculture to undertake an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) assessing the impacts of the crop on the environment and on farmers; the first time the U.S. government had ever undertaken such analysis for any GE crop. The court permitted farmers that had already planted to continue, but halted any further planting pending the agency’s re-assessment. That the EIS was required is not in dispute; the legal issue is only the scope of relief while USDA analyzed the impacts of the crop for the first time.

In October 2009 Monsanto asked the Supreme Court to hear further arguments. In response, the Center and the U.S. government separately opposed that request the following December. USDA completed the first draft of the EIS in December 2009.

“Although we believe a further hearing is unnecessary, we are confident we will again prevail, as the lower courts have already three times determined,” continued Kimbrell. “We hope that this grand stage will further inform the public, policymakers and the media about the significant risks of genetically engineered crops and the vital need to protect farmers and the environment.”

Alfalfa is the fourth most widely grown crop in the U.S. and a key source of dairy forage. It is the first perennial crop to be genetically engineered. It is open-pollinated by bees, which can cross-pollinate at distances of several miles, spreading the patented, foreign DNA to conventional and organic crops. Such biological contamination threatens the livelihood of organic farmers and dairies, since the U.S. Organic standard prohibits genetic engineering, and alfalfa exporters, since most overseas governments also reject GE-contaminated crops.

“We trust the Supreme Court will uphold farmers right to choose their crop of choice and protect us from the constant fear of contamination from GE crops,” said Phil Geertson, an alfalfa farmer based in Idaho.

A 2009 study showed that the use of genetically modified crops, the vast majority Monsanto’s “roundup ready” crops, has caused over the last 13 years a dramatic increase in herbicide use, by 383 million pounds, and concomitant harms to the environment and human health.

The U.S. Department of Justice has undertaken an investigation of Monsanto regarding violations of anti-trust and monopoly laws and is set to hold public hearings in spring 2010.

Another 2009 study showed that, despite decades of promises and hype, GE crops do not increase yields.

Local residents oppose Smith Lake mining permits

BREMEN — Marty Roberson does not want his neighborhood to be overrun with mining trucks, or to have the echo of blast charges rattle through his Smith Lake home.

Roberson, and more than 60 other concerned residents, met in the Bremen community recently to oppose permit requests by National Coal of Alabama to establish a surface mining operation in the Brushy Pond community.

“Anyone who believes Smith Lake is going to benefit from this isn’t thinking clearly,” Roberson said. “I live on this lake and brought my family up here ... We’re not going to stop surface mining, but we don’t have to have it here.”

National Coal of Alabama has recently applied for a mining permit from the Alabama Surface Mining Commission.

Wow, I could not be more disappointed in this mess of a bill that does all too little for Middle America - remember those of us who you promised to fight for and bring about real change in Washington? - and all too much for Big Pharma and the insurance lobbby. You've "beaten back the special interests who have for so long perpetuated the status quo" - yeah right! You may be fooling yourself into believing that, but no one outside the beltway is buying it.

Thanks so much for bending to the right and promoting a bill that bascially just imposes a mandatory health care tax on those who can least afford it. I thought I was voting for a strong Democratic leader who had the spine to stand on his principles, but apparently our party is still run by pragmatists who are all too willing to make unforgiveable compromises and slaughter their own legislation just to get that magic 60. I don't see why that was so important when it wasn't even necessary - how many bills did Bush get passed into law with a mere 51 votes?

It would've been great if the Dems had stuck to their guns on the public option instead of bending to the loud voices of a very few who don't represent the majority of Americans, but apparently politics as usual is STILL all we're getting out of Washington. So much for "change we can believe in."

Although it's Christmas Eve, I wanted to share some exciting news: The Senate just passed a historic health reform bill.

In all the back and forth, it's easy to lose sight of what this incredible breakthrough really means. But consider this: This Christmas, there are millions of Americans without health insurance who risk losing everything if they get sick.

There are mothers and fathers who wonder how they'll provide for their children because an illness has wiped out their savings. There are small business owners who worry that they'll have to lay off a long-time employee because the cost of insurance is rapidly rising.

Former Army Captain Duncan Lamb has been an entrepreneur in Birmingham for the past five years. He built a project management company from the ground up, which served local businesses as diverse as hospitals, government agencies, and the coal and auto industries. Since selling his company two years ago, Duncan has stayed active in the entrepreneurial community as a consultant and mentor for multiple start-up businesses, including some of those housed at the Innovation Depot downtown, and a new apartment-finding service called Select My Space -- but he has no office space of his own to work from! Duncan's wife Jem has been a social worker and therapist supporting families involved in foster care and adoption for the past seven years. Now it's time for her to stay home and care for the couple's first baby, due in April, but Jem doesn't want to give up serving foster and adoptive families; she would like to keep using her professional license to do part-time contract work, such as leading classes and completing home studies for potential adoptive parents. A functional home office would allow Jem and Duncan to spend time with their family, yet remain actively involved in promoting local economic progress and meeting social needs. Faced with the expenses of getting ready for their baby, the Lambs really need a Bruce Office makeover, and would make good use of it to give back to the Birmingham community they love!

This family has lost their home and the apartment does not allow dogs.
They are looking for a home for the two Labs.

As many of you know, we are moving in just 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to find a good home for Cookie and Coco. We're not able to take our beloved doggies with us and I've been desperately trying to find a home for both of them 'together'. They were raised together and pine without each other. The Lab rescue has already said that they would probably separate them, so this is my last resort.

Recently I tried to take Coco out in my car alone and she TOTALLY refused to even get into the car without Cookie.....!!!! She absolutely pulled back on her haunches until Cookie was by her side.Both doggies are in great health, have been spayed and have ID chips implanted under
the skin.

Cookie turned 3 December 10th and Coco will be 3 April 1st. Cookie is my mellow-yellow, and just loves her tummy rubbed. Coco is adorably funny and lives for her "ball". She also loves the water...... Cookie loves lots of attention. Both doggies are loyal and love to walk. They have been raised with my 3 kids running around all over the place, and have survived Sammy's constant hugging and love of 'dress-up', so they are fantastic family dogs. This is by far one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, but under the circumstances I have no choice.

Please, Please forward these pics to all you know and help me find a great home for these fabulous doggies. They are just adorable and it's heartbreaking to let them go. In a perfect world, I hope that we could find someone local so that we can still keep in touch and visit them.
I pray that someone, somewhere can help us keep Cookie and Coco together, and love them just as much as we do. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

A group in Birmingham has big plans to build an Asian Cultural Center smack dab in the middle of George Ward Park!

Everyone should attend the meetings and get involved! The group is having presentations about the project on the following dates at St. Elias Church (the one across the street from Giuseppe's):
November 24 (Monday)
December 8 &15
January 12
I believe these are scheduled for 7 p.m., but could not confirm that.

February 2, 2009 - They will be at the Neighborhood Meeting at St. Elias Church at 7:00 pm and will be asking for the neighborhood association's blessings so they can secure the land with the city. This is the most important one! We need to get as many folks as possible to this one to vote against the project!!! The group needs the neighborhood's support to secure the land with the City.

It's my understanding that the areas outlined in red on the map below are roughly the parcels they want to use to build the 3-story Asian Cultural Center and gardens, etc. at George Ward Park! You can see a larger map here.

Here's the group's web site: http://www.bhmasianfound.org. Their plans are MASSIVE and would bring a huge amount of traffic into the neighborhood and the park, not to mention completely destroy a large chunk of the golf course. In addition, they expected to have 50 full-time employees and 20-30 part-time employees!

Make no mistake...this project is NOT about cultural diversity, it is about commercial development. If Mr. Davis says that he won't need any money from the City of Birmingham after two years of operation, he is talking about a BIG commercial development. And, that commercial development comes with a 6-8 foot wall around it so that the owners of the property on the 400 block of Green Springs Ave., and those people using the park, will have only a wall for a view, and that you as a citizen of the City of Birmingham, will have to pay to enter what is now free.

Mr. Davis does not talk about the amount of additional traffic on an already heavily used street. The original proposal encompassed "only" the portions of GWP on the south side of "new" Green Springs Ave, with "lovely" gardens and pathways....now it has grown, and will continue to do so as ideas grow to encompass all "available" space.

Mr. Davis wants all of this property - YOUR DEDICATED PARK - given to him, free for at least 75 years. Much of it will be used for parking --- which means asphalt or concrete over what is now ground that can absorb water (when it actually rains). That concrete or asphalt will have a runoff that will flood and/or pollute the streams and springs for which the park and the streets are named.

If you manage to steal this election too, we've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking all the Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly:

You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.

We get stem cell research and the best beaches.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.

We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.

We get 85% of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Utah.

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the Red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22% lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of broken homes.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80% of the country's fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92% of the nation's fresh fruit, 95% of America's quality wines, 90% of all cheese, 90% of the high tech industry, 95% of the corn and soybeans (thanks Iowa!), most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88% of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92% of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99% of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

In the last few days, John McCain has gained ground in most national polls, as his campaign has gone even more negative.

Misleading flyers about the voting process have started appearing in black neighborhoods. And of course, many counties still use unsecure voting machines.

4. Those who forget history... In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote after trailing by seven points in the final days of the race. In 1980, Reagan was eight points down in the polls in late October and came back to win. Races can shift—fast!

4. Instead of buying bottled water, carry a stainless steel water bottle and refill it with filtered tap water.

5. Buy whole food, local food, and bulk food to cut back on unnecessary packaging. Grow a garden, join a Community Supported Agriculture group, or shop at a local farmers market instead of buying prewashed veggies in plastic bags — reduces your carbon footprint too.

As soon as today (Tuesday), the Senate will vote on an amendment to the national Flood Insurance Bill offered by Senator Mitch McConnell (KY) and co-sponsored by Senator Pete Domenici (NM) that threatens polar bears and other wildlife.

Rather than addressing high oil prices and dependence on foreign oil by moving toward better alternatives and practical solutions, this amendment promotes more drilling in more places for more oil profits.

This is not a solution, it’s a sell off. Please take action right now…

Call or e-mail your Senators and urge them to OPPOSE the McConnell-Domenici amendment (#4720) to the Flood Insurance Bill. This awful amendment would allow harmful drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, promote the use of unproven coal-to-liquid technologies, promote environmentally harmful shale development and end the decades-old moratorium on new drilling off the coasts of Florida, California, Virginia and other coastal states.

The McConnell-Domenici amendment is the latest in a long string of ill-conceived, cynical and increasingly desperate attempts by the oil companies and their allies in Congress to industrialize our wild places under the guise of “energy security.”

Here are some facts about the amendment that the oil companies don’t want you to hear…

It won’t lower summer gas prices in America.
New drilling offshore and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge wouldn’t hit the market for many years. Even then, its effect on prices at the pump will be small. In fact, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data indicates that in 2030, when oil discovered in the Arctic Refuge would be near peak production levels, the effect at the gas pump would be only about two pennies per gallon.
The McConnell-Domenici amendment will threaten polar bears.
The noise and disturbance caused by drilling in the Arctic Refuge -- the most important onshore denning habitat for America’s struggling polar bears -- could cause polar bear mothers to abandon their cubs to die. Such drilling would also further extend America’s dependence on climate-changing fuel sources that are threatening the very survival of these and other animals.
The McConnell-Domenici amendment will threaten birds, sea lions and other wildlife.
Last year’s disastrous oil spill off the coast of San Francisco, which killed birds and raised concerns about the long-term impacts on the area’s sea lions and harbor seals, demonstrates the dangers of increased oil production and shipping off our coasts.
The amendment will undercut efforts to fight global warming.
The McConnell-Dominici amendment would not only extend America’s addiction to oil, it would also encourage the use of coal-to-liquid technology -- which emits high quantities of greenhouse gasses -- and promote environmentally destructive oil shale development.

Tell Gov. Riley Alabama wants to recycle!

In a legislative session that has been marred by a virtually shut down state Senate, a bill that would provide funding for local recycling programs was ushered through on April 10. The Recycled Materials Management Act - HB395 - passed both Houses of the state legislature and is awaiting Governor Bob Riley's signature.

We need you to contact Governor Riley and encourage him to sign HB395 into law in order to provide $7.6 million for recycling programs, cleaning up illegal dumps, and monitoring permitted landfills.

Action Needed:

Back in the days of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Red Army had an official choir composed of male soldiers and musicians. It still exists. The Red Army Choir performs throughout Russia to this day.

Now consider the Finnish rock band called The Leningrad Cowboys. A little while ago, they held a concert in Russia, in which - to the screaming applause of Russkie teen-agers - they got the Red Army Choir to join them on stage for a performance of "Sweet Home Alabama." In English. You couldn't make this up.

We're talking seriously off the wall here. Better have that Stoli ready when you watch it.
